Specialty Courts

As a tool that facilitates the efforts of both law enforcement and treatment, SCRAMx is closely aligned with the mission of Specialty Courts and provides the technology that complements this integrated model.

Through continuous alcohol monitoring, SCRAMx enables Specialty Court judges to equally impose sanctions and grant incentives with speed and certainty. Likewise, it promotes the extended sobriety and behavior change required to facilitate effective treatment.

From a treatment perspective, the integration of CAM with curfew monitoring makes sense for those offenders who face incarceration for alcohol-related crimes. Not only has incarceration been repeatedly proven ineffective in changing long-term behavior, but jails and prisons nationwide are suffering from severe overcrowding. If offenders could earn credit for time served while confined to their homes and monitored for drinking, they could actively participate in the treatment programs they need and be clear-headed to truly benefit from them.

SCRAMx supports the Specialty Court model, with key objectives that include:

  • Enables continuous enforcement of court-ordered abstinence, while supporting the behavioral changes that facilitate effective treatment
  • Provides evidence-based detection and assessment of an offender’s drinking problem to promote firm − yet fair – sentencing
  • Decreases jail overcrowding and taxpayer costs by providing a proven, economical alternative to incarceration
  • Reduces recidivism and promotes rehabilitation by addressing the root cause of the addiction
  • Enhances public safety
